Quotes are like little precious gems. They can be easily overlooked, but they shouldn’t be. Often the wisdom of the ages is captured in the words of famous, infamous, or just average people. Most of us love to travel, so it’s important for us to hear what others have said about travel. Here are just a few of my favourite quotations about travel:

Mark Twain, the famous American author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn fame said, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” It certainly is! Mark Twain also said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

The famous Scottish poet, novelist, and travel writer Robert Louis Stevenson said: “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveller only who is foreign.” That’s true, and it’s a point that American travellers need to bear in mind when travelling abroad.

St. Augustine was a philosopher and theologian who wrote, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

And there’s an old Moorish proverb that tells us, “He who does not travel does not know the value of men.”

Lao Tzu was the father of Taoism. There are two things that Lao Tzu that always come to mind when I travel. The first is, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” The second is, “A good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.”

I’ll leave you with the thoughts of Lillian Smith of “Strange Fruit” fame. She said, “I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.”
